Foster care
More than 3 million children are orphaned in South Africa. Their biological parents are not alive anymore. South Africa has a population of about 48 million. The number of orphans is still increasing, especially because of the HIV/Aids pandemic.
Khothatsong therefore regards it as one of its primary activities to reach out to these children affected and often infected as well by HIV/Aids.
The FOSTER CARE BOARD functions as an executive body in this regard. Members are Tineke Visée, Arnoud van den Bout and Pieter Boon. Tineke is a profession nurse, Arnoud is an attorney, and Pieter is a missionary in the Soshanguve area. As Christians they are involved as volunteers.
The FOSTER CARE BOARD has two primary objectives:
giving assistance to people who want to adopt orphans. Often this is a difficult and tiresome process for people to go through. Sometimes a couple wants to adopt orphans, but doesn’t have the financial means. The FOSTER CARE BOARD is assisting in these respects.
Erecting of foster care homes in the Soshanguve area. A house is provided where a foster mother (and perhaps foster father) takes care of up to 6 orphans. In this way a safe place is offered to these orphans. These small scale projects are much more effective than large orphanages. It is far better for an orphan to grow up in a ‘normal’ house.
The FOSTER CARE BOARD cooperates with other organisations that specialise in foster care and adoption.
We also work in close cooperation with the local Free Reformed Church and where possible a Christian school.
Presently and in future funds are urgently needed for these projects. We pray that you will consider to support these projects. Donations can be made to the account of Khothatsong: click on Fund raising in the margin. Please mark clearly that the donation is for the FOSTER CARE BOARD.
Children are the future. To invest in children is a long term investment and worthwhile, especially from a Christian perspective. Didn’t Christ teach us never to neglect the children? (Matthew 19:13-15, Mark 10:13-16, Luke 18:15-17).
The diagram below shows the interaction between the Foster Board and the commitment from the organisation uMephi. uMephi aims to build foster homes for families. With their help we will purchase a piece of land in Soshanguve (in the region of the Free Reformed Church and school) on which two houses will be built. The Foster Board then has to find suitable foster parents and six children to occupy the house. uMephi also assists with the legal procedures in foster cases. We will gain assistance from local handimen to see to the upkeep of the houses. It is a privilege to accommodate children in our church family where they may learn of God’s grace and care in their lives.
