Khothatsong AIDS Committee
Khothatsong means “place of comfort”.
The mission of the Khothatsong Aids Committee is to assist in the physical and spiritual care of people affected and infected by the HIV/Aids pandemic.
Khothatsong makes a difference to people's lives where South Africa ranks in the top HIV prevalence countries in the world. 17.3% of the population estimated to be infected (UNAIDS 2011[i]). In the region of 5,6 million people in South Africa live with aids and there are 380,000 new infections every year. Annually 270,000 people die as a result of aids related diseases (UNAIDS 2011).
In 2011 there were 260 000 pregnant women in South Africa that received anti-retroviral medication during their pregnancy, resulting in a drop in the annual figure for new child infections that is now well below 50,000 babies a year. Aids is most prevalent in the economically active sector of society and UNAIDS 2011 estimates that south Africa has 2,1 million orphans – aged 0-17 years old - due to aids.
Faced by this overwhelming situation, a group of volunteers established the Khothatsong Association in 2004. Through interlinking projects we offer help to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Gauteng province. Khothatsong is a Christian organisation and we provide care for people infected or affected by HIV/Aids on Christian values.
